Over the last few months the world has been changed by the spread of COVID-19. As an organization, we have decided to respond by moving all of our programming to ONLINE! All of our programming for the Fall of 2020 through 2021 will be hosted online or in very limited in-person capacity as needed.
This Fall we are introducing our Professional Development Workshop Series which includes:
Mindfulness & Self-Care: Secondary Trauma & You
Cultivating Compassionate Spaces: Integrating Trauma-Sensitive Frameworks
Dismantling Racism: a Three-part workshop on systemic racism, and how we each can play a role in toppling white supremacy.
We will also be hosting our Dance With Me & Story Time Yoga programs for schools and community centers for after school programs or daytime learning.
For our parents we will be hosting Good Morning Yoga with Jan every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 8:00 am - 9:00 am, and Gentle Women's Yoga with Creation Cottage on Mondays at 6:00 pm, and with the wonderful Amanda Daley at 6:00 pm on Thursdays.
If you'd like to learn more about any of the programs or workshops we offer, you can contact us by clicking here, or visit our Professional Workshops page for more info on our Professional Development Workshop Series or our Children & Families page for more info about Dance With Me, Story-Time Yoga, Good Morning Yoga, & Gentle Women's Yoga.
Every child has the tools and opportunities to achieve their highest capacity. We accomplish this through a trauma-informed, comprehensive, collective impact plan that addresses the whole child and engages the full community around the goal of empowering its youth to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations.
At AHHAH we work with a simple formula: 5 C's = T
Compassion + Creativity + Connection + Courage + Commitment = Transformation
We serve the youth & families of Chester County. Our primary focus is on Coatesville & Kennett Square. As our organization grows we hope to expand our programming to all of the communities in the Greater Delaware Valley.
As an organization, AHHAH is committed to providing every child with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. Our Professional Development Workshops and Expressive Arts Workshops are specifically designed in response to the structural oppression that holds our youth back. It is our hope that we can work to reduce the rate of recidivism for youth in Chester County and beyond. Our expressive arts and mindfulness workshops are designed for incarcerated and adjudicated youth, as well as youth in foster care. These workshops build self-advocacy, and self-regulation skills that youth desperately need as they move forward in their lives.
The National Institute of Justice defines Recidivism as a person's relapse into criminal behavior, often after the person receives sanctions or undergoes intervention for a previous crime. There are not currently national statistics regarding juvenile recidivism. In December 2018, President Trump signed into law the Juvenile Justice Reform Act of 2018 (JJRA), reauthorizing and substantially amending the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974. The JJRA requires the development of a national annual reporting system. This system will help organizations like AHHAH more accurately measure our program efficacy.
In 2017 the PA Juvenile Court announced in their Annual Report that, "White Non-Hispanic youth represented the largest racial/ethnic category for all delinquency allegations. However, in comparison to the racial/ethnic distribution of all youth in Pennsylvania aged 10- 17, the representation of Black Non-Hispanic youth is disproportionate: 14.1% of the total population versus 37.8% of all delinquency allegations. When excluding Philadelphia County and Allegheny County, Black Non-Hispanic youth represent 8.2% of the youth population, but 27.3% of all delinquency allegations." The most frequently alleged category was "Non Payment of Fines."
"I liked that I got to be open, relieve my stress and forgive myself for my past and move through this road block. I honestly feel like you should do more of these workshops so kids that are really down can somewhat stand back up." - Detention Participant
“Something that stood out to me is the way we respected each other and didn’t judge one another”- R.J. 16
"AHHAH is a consistent, caring, and a transforming power that brings HOPE to our youth. AHHAH serves all Chester County Youth Center youth programs with the most kind and compassionate staff. We can’t imagine CCYC without AHHAH!” - Carrie Avery, program director of Chester County Youth Center
"This class today helped me share some things about my life that I never really expressed to anyone." - CCYC Detention (teen participant)
"Before I come to yoga, I'm sad, irritated, depressed, and annoyed. After yoga I'm a little bit happy, calmed. I feel good." - CCYC Shelter for Girls (teen participant)
